FRIDAY · THE TINY ADVENTURE
This weekend we are going to send you to the movies by yourself, in the middle of the day, and it is going to be wonderful.
I know how that might land at first. Going to a film alone can feel like something to be a little embarrassed about, as though it announces you had no one to bring.
It announces nothing of the kind. It is one of the quietest luxuries available to a woman who has spent years coordinating everyone else's outings.
Think about what it usually takes to see a movie. The scheduling, the who-wants-to-go, the compromise on which film, the making sure everyone is happy.
Now take all of that away. Just you, a film you chose, a seat you picked, and two hours where no one needs a single thing from you.
This weekend, find a matinee. The middle of the day is part of the gift, a time that feels a little stolen, a little indulgent, entirely yours.
Pick the film you want to see. Not the sensible choice, not the one the family would like, the one that made you curious.
Buy the popcorn if you want it. Sit in your favorite spot. Let the lights go down on a room where you owe nothing to anyone.
There is a specific pleasure in walking out of a theater into afternoon light, blinking, a little dazed, having spent two hours somewhere else entirely. You did that for no one but yourself.
That is the whole adventure. A dark room, a story, and a woman who took herself out on purpose.
THIS WEEKEND
Look up the matinee times at your nearest theater and pick one film that made you curious. Go alone, in the daylight hours, and let yourself have the popcorn and the good seat. Two hours, chosen entirely by you.
THE PERMISSION SLIP
Today you have permission to take yourself to the movies alone and call it one of the best parts of your week.
