TUESDAY · THE SMALL INVITATION
You have gotten very good at "fine."
Someone asks how you are, and the word is out of your mouth before you have even checked whether it is true.
Yesterday we sat with the loneliness of being needed but not known. Today, the way out, and it is smaller than you think.
You do not have to confide in anyone or open up in some big, exposing way. You just have to let one true detail slip out where someone can catch it.
Here is your invitation. The next time someone safe asks how you are, give them one honest thing instead of "fine."
It does not have to be heavy. It can be as simple as, "I am tired in a way sleep is not fixing," or "I have been thinking about taking a class."
One real sentence about your actual inner life, offered to one person who is capable of hearing it. That is the whole practice.
You are not asking them to fix anything. You are simply letting yourself be seen for a moment, which is a different and braver thing.
It may feel oddly risky, like standing a step closer than usual. Notice that, and say the true thing anyway.
Being known begins exactly here, in the small choice to be a little more honest than the moment strictly requires. One detail, one person, today.
The people who love you cannot see you through a closed door. Today, you are just leaving it open a crack.
THE PERMISSION SLIP
Today you have permission to answer one honest question with one honest answer.
ONE THING TO NOTICE
Today, notice how quickly "fine" arrives, and whether it is ever quite true when you say it.
