MONDAY · THE GENTLE OPEN

The house has gone quiet in a way it does not usually go quiet.

Everyone is out, nothing is scheduled, and there is an unplanned stretch of afternoon in front of you.

You stand in the kitchen with your hand on the counter. And you have no idea what to do with it.

So you start a load of laundry. Or you answer the emails you have been avoiding, or you get ahead on dinner, or you tidy a drawer that no one has ever noticed.

The hour disappears into usefulness, and later you feel a small pang you cannot quite name.

This is one of the quieter griefs of a life spent on other people. Not the exhaustion, which everyone talks about, but the strange helplessness that arrives the moment you are handed time that is genuinely your own.

You have gotten very good at filling time. What you have lost is the ability to spend it.

For years your hours have been assigned before you woke up. There has been a need attached to nearly every one of them, and needs are easy in their own way, because they tell you exactly what to do next.

Unstructured time asks a harder question. It asks what you want, and it waits, and the silence where the answer should be can feel almost unbearable.

So you fill it, because filling it is more comfortable than sitting in the not knowing. And then the free hour is gone and nothing in you has been fed.

I want to say clearly that this is not a personal failing. You are not lazy or ungrateful or bad at relaxing.

You are simply out of practice at a skill nobody has asked you to use in a very long time. And skills come back with practice, slowly, without drama.

This week we are going to work on that. Not on finding you more free time, which is a different problem, but on being able to actually use the free time you get.

Carry this into your week: not knowing what you want is not emptiness. It is a question you have not been given room to answer yet.

ONE THING TO NOTICE

Today, notice what your hands reach for the moment you have nothing that must be done. See whether the reaching is a want or a habit.

THE QUESTION TO SIT WITH

If a free hour arrived this afternoon with no strings on it, what would I honestly do with it?

THE BREADCRUMB

Tomorrow, a small way to start collecting the answers before the next free hour arrives.

See you tomorrow.
