WEDNESDAY · THE RECLAIMING

A name floats up sometimes, usually when you are not looking for it.

An old friend. Someone who once knew the daily texture of your life, and now lives at the edge of it, or past the edge entirely.

There was no falling out. That is almost the sadder part.

You did not fight. You just got busy, both of you, and the calls got shorter, and then the calls stopped, and the distance filled in quietly like snow.

Female friendship is often the first thing to go when a woman's life gets crowded. It feels optional in a way that duties never do.

The kids, the job, the marriage, the parents. Those come with obligations that announce themselves, while a friendship only asks softly and is easy to keep meaning to get to.

So you let it drift, not from any lack of love, but from a lack of room. And you told yourself you would reconnect when things settled down, which they never quite did.

Here is what you may not let yourself feel. You miss her, not the logistics of the friendship, but the specific way you were known by someone who chose you once, for no reason but that she liked you.

That friendship is more recoverable than the silence makes it seem. The thread is thinner than a phone call and easier to pick up than you fear.

You do not need to explain the years of quiet or apologize for the drift. You just reach out, small and warm, as if less time had passed than has.

SO TODAY, THINK OF ONE PERSON. THEN SEND THE SHORT MESSAGE:

"You crossed my mind today, and I realized I miss you."

That is the whole reclaiming. Not rebuilding a friendship in an afternoon, just reopening one door you have missed standing in.

THE RECLAMATION LIST

Things worth remembering about the friend who knew you:

  • The conversations that ran for hours and still felt too short.

  • Being understood without having to lay the whole story out first.

  • Laughing until it hurt, about something no one else would find funny.

  • Having a person who was yours, chosen freely, outside of duty or family.

A LETTER TO THE WOMAN YOU WERE

To the woman who let the friendships slip: you did not know how much you would miss being known that way, or you might have held on harder. It is not too late to reach back. The ones who truly mattered will remember you the moment they hear your voice.

See you tomorrow.
