WEDNESDAY · THE RECLAIMING

When did you stop being the funny one?

Because you were, at some point. Sharp, quick, the one with the observation that made the table go over.

You had a particular sense of humor that was yours. Dry, or absurd, or wicked about the right things, and people came to you for it.

Now you are pleasant. Warm, kind, good company, and very rarely the funniest person in the room.

Here is what happened, and it is worth understanding properly. Being funny requires nerve.

You have to believe you are entitled to the room's attention for a few seconds. You have to be willing to risk the joke landing badly and sitting there in the silence.

And you have to be a little bit selfish, which is the part that went first. A woman managing everyone's comfort cannot also be interrupting to be witty.

I stopped getting UTIs 6 months ago

I used to get a UTI every time I was intimate with my husband.

Every. Single. Time.

So I just… stopped. For months.

I tried antibiotics, cranberry pills, drinking water until I was sick of water.

Nothing worked.

Then a friend told me about a urologist who found the real reason UTIs come back.

Not bacteria. Something deeper.

She shared a short viedeo that explained everything.

I haven’t had a UTI in 6 months.

So the humor got redirected into service. The same redirection happened to the way you describe yourself, back when we listened for the word you put in front of your own life.

Smoothing things over, making other people feel at ease, the light remark that defuses tension rather than the sharp one that delights.

That is a real skill and it has kept a lot of rooms peaceful. It is also not the same thing at all.

What you lost is not the ability to be funny. It is the permission to take up the airtime that being funny requires.

The jokes are still forming. You have thought of three good ones this week and said none of them, because the moment belonged to somebody else's point.

So this week, say one. Out loud, at full strength, without softening it into something gentler first.

Let it land or die on its own merits. Both outcomes are survivable, and the risk is the entire point.

THE RECLAMATION LIST

Things worth remembering about being funny:

  • The specific pleasure of making someone laugh harder than they meant to.

  • Having a sense of humor that was recognisably yours and nobody else's.

  • The joke you thought of and said, rather than the one you thought of and swallowed.

  • Being witty rather than merely nice, and knowing the difference.

ONE THING TO NOTICE

Today, notice the joke you decide not to make. There will be at least one. Notice what you tell yourself about why.

See you tomorrow.
