TUESDAY · THE SMALL INVITATION
You have been asked what you want so rarely that you have stopped keeping track of the answers.
That is the real problem with the empty hour. Not that you have no wants, but that you have no record of them.
Yesterday we sat with the free afternoon you did not know how to use. Today we start gathering the answers in advance.
Because wants do not usually arrive on demand. They arrive sideways, in small flickers, in the middle of an ordinary day when you have no time to act on them.
You see a photograph of a place and something in you leans toward it. You hear about a class, a book, a garden, a way of spending a morning, and you feel a small yes.
And then the moment passes, and the flicker is gone, and by the time you have an hour free you cannot remember a single thing you were interested in.
Here is your invitation. Open the notes app on your phone, or take a piece of paper and put it somewhere you will see it, and start a list.
Call it whatever you like. Things I am curious about, or simply things I want.
Today, put one item on it. Anything that caught your attention, however small or impractical or unlikely.
The pie you thought about making. The town an hour away you have never visited.
The instrument you would like to try badly. The subject you would read about if no one asked why.
You are not committing to any of it. You are only writing it down, which is a much smaller act and a much more important one than it looks.
Over weeks, that list becomes something you have not had in years. Evidence, in your own handwriting, that you are a woman with preferences and curiosity and an inner life of her own.
And the next time an unexpected hour opens up, you will not have to invent an answer on the spot. You will simply look at the list.
THE PERMISSION SLIP
Today you have permission to write down a want you have no intention of acting on yet.
A LETTER TO THE WOMAN YOU WERE
To the woman who stopped keeping track of her own interests: you did not lose your curiosity, you just stopped writing it down, and after a while it got quiet. Start the list again. She has plenty to say once she believes someone is recording it.
