WEDNESDAY · THE RECLAIMING
There is a meal that happens at the kitchen counter, standing up, straight out of the pan, at about a quarter past two in the afternoon.
It is made of what was left. Two cold potatoes, the end of something, half a sandwich abandoned by somebody who said they were hungry.
You would not call it a meal. It does not appear on any accounting of what you ate that day, and you have eaten this way several times a week for years.
Notice what is happening there. You cook properly for other people, with care and attention and a plate.
For yourself, you graze on the remainder. Standing, quickly, so that it does not take up time that belongs to something else.
This is one of the clearest places the pattern shows, because food is so concrete. Everyone else in your house gets fed. You get what is left over. Same arithmetic as the money, back when we argued that you could spend it on yourself for no reason at all.
It did not start as self-denial. It started as efficiency, and as not wanting to waste anything, and as there never being a good moment to sit.
But do it for fifteen years and it becomes a position you hold about yourself. You are the one who eats standing up.

Put This On Your Panties To Get Rid Of Bladder Leaks
All I did was rub this on my panties and —WOW!
My bladder leaks are gone.
Now I’m no longer afraid to wear white pants, dance, or be intimate with my husband.
Better yet, the doctor who uncovered this secret also posted a video, that’s free for the next few days, where she shows you what to do.
Don’t wait:
There is also something specific that got lost in it, beyond the nutrition. Sitting down to a meal is how a person marks that the afternoon has a middle.
It is a pause with a shape. Standing at the counter is not a pause at all, it is just a gap inside the work.
So here is the reclaiming, and it costs nothing but twenty minutes. This week, make yourself one meal that is not leftovers and sit down at a table to eat it.
It does not have to be elaborate. Toast made properly, with something good on it, counts entirely.
The requirements are only these. You chose it, it is on a plate, you are sitting, and nothing else is happening at the same time.
No phone, no standing, no eating the remains of something meant for somebody else. Just a woman having lunch, which is the most ordinary thing in the world and which you have not done in a very long time.
THE QUESTION TO SIT WITH
When did I last sit at a table and eat something I chose, alone, on a plate?
ONE THING TO NOTICE
Today, notice where you are standing when you eat and whose food it originally was.
A LETTER TO THE WOMAN YOU WERE
To the woman who started eating the leftovers so nothing would go to waste: it was practical, and then it was a habit, and then it was a statement about who gets fed properly in that house. You were always on the list. Make yourself lunch.
If someone came to mind while you were reading this, send her these letters. The Permission Slips are yours when she stays.
