THURSDAY · THE PERMISSION SLIP

It is Saturday morning and the house is full. Someone is in the kitchen, someone else has the television on, and a voice is calling your name from another room.

Nothing is wrong. Everyone is fine, and you love all of them, and there is a small tight feeling in your chest anyway.

What you want is for them all to leave. Not permanently, not for long. Just out, so that you can be alone in your own house.

And the moment you notice yourself wanting it, the guilt arrives. What kind of woman wishes her own family gone.

So you never say it. You go somewhere else instead, out on an errand, into the car, to the store you do not need anything from, because leaving is more acceptable than asking anyone else to.

Notice how strange that is. You will remove yourself from your own home rather than request an hour of it to yourself.

The house is where you have done the most work and where you have the least ownership. Every other person in it has, at some point, had it to themselves.

You have had it empty by accident, occasionally, and you can probably remember exactly how those hours felt.

Why I won’t fade no matter what you try

A Confession From Your Dark Spots

This is your dark spots speaking.

You know, the patches of age spots and inky splotches that pop up out of nowhere.

I have something important to tell you.

First, an apology…

I’m sorry I refuse to fade no matter how many department store creams you slather on me…

I’m sorry if you feel forced to hide your skin under layers of concealer…

And I’m sorry if I’ve embarrassed you… made you worried people think you don’t take your skincare seriously.

I know you may be considering painful laser surgery, even if it does cost you thousands of dollars you can ill afford.

Here’s what I need you to understand:

It’s not your fault I’m here.

Yes, spending too much time in the sun during your twenties is a factor…

But it’s not the main reason I’m here… and refuse to fade.

I’m here because of a newly discovered biological pathway in your skin.

A pathway that controls how, when, and where I form...

And how deeply I “set in.”

All those expensive chemical peels and laser treatments…

All they do is burn off the top layers to strip me away...

They don’t shut the biological pathway down.

Which is why I keep coming back.

You know what will shut the pathway down?

A solution that stops your skin producing more dark spots.

This means I can then finally fade... until I vanish completely.

Not in months…

You can see visible results in as little as 15 days.

The best part?

This solution doesn’t require painful treatments or expensive medspa visits.

It’s a simple, at-home technique that works better than anything you may have tried:

I’m ready to say goodbye. Are you ready to let me go, too?

Your Dark Spots

Here is what wanting an empty house actually is, and it is not what the guilt claims. It is not a wish to be rid of anyone.

It is the need to stop performing availability for a while, in the one place where you never get to stop. A person cannot rest in a room where she is on call.

This is the other half of being surrounded and still a little lonely. There you were among people and unseen. Here you are seen constantly and never left alone.

So here is your permission, and it comes with an instruction attached because this one requires saying out loud. You are allowed to want the house to yourself, and you are allowed to ask for it.

Not by leaving. By staying, and asking them to go somewhere for two hours.

You do not need a reason and you do not need a project to justify it. Two hours in an empty house, doing nothing in particular, is a legitimate thing for a woman to want.

They will go. They will not be wounded, and they will very likely not think about it again.

THE QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did I last have this house to myself on purpose, rather than by accident?

A LETTER TO THE WOMAN YOU WERE

To the woman who kept leaving her own home to get a moment of peace: you had every right to stay and ask for the room instead. It never occurred to you that you were allowed. You are.

See you tomorrow.
