THURSDAY · THE PERMISSION SLIP
When did you last have a thought you did not report to anybody?
Not something shameful. Just an ordinary thought that stayed yours.
Watch yourself this week and you will find that you narrate almost everything. Where you are going, when you will be back, how you slept, what you are worried about, what you thought of the thing you read.
A good deal of that is logistics, and logistics are how a household runs. But somewhere the logistics expanded into something closer to full disclosure.
You are accounted for at all times, including on the inside. If someone asks what you are thinking, you tell them, immediately and accurately, every single time.
Let me be careful here, because there is a version of this that is not what I mean. I am not talking about keeping secrets from people you love, or about building a hidden life, or about deceiving anybody about anything.
An inner life is not a secret. A secret is something withheld that another person has a right to know.
This is also not the opposite of saying something truer than fine. That was about being known on purpose. This is about not being transparent by default. You need both, and the difference between them is who decides.

This bottled water = heart attack
You can drink water the “wrong way”…
…and increase your risk of heart attack by 42%.
I know that sounds crazy.
But it’s true…and it’s happening to millions of Americans right now.

Here’s the scary part:
Even though water should be good for your heart…
Most tap water today is loaded with invisible toxins, like PFAS, arsenic, and chlorine.
These chemicals trigger free radical damage inside your body…
That’s how people with “great health” still drop dead from sudden heart attacks.
An inner life is simply the ordinary private territory where a person keeps her own thoughts before deciding whether to share them. Everyone is entitled to one, and you appear to have given yours away somewhere around 2003.
Here is why it matters, and it is not about privacy for its own sake. A thought you report the instant you have it never gets to develop.
It becomes a conversation before it has finished being an idea. And a woman whose every interior movement is immediately handed over to the room has no place left where anything of hers can grow undisturbed.
So here is your permission. You are allowed to think something and not say it.
You are allowed to read something and not mention it, to change your mind about something privately, to feel a feeling all the way through before anyone else is told it exists.
Not because anyone is untrustworthy. Because you are entitled to an inside, and a self needs somewhere unobserved to be kept.
WHAT SHE SAID
Greta Garbo spent years correcting the line everyone attributed to her. She had not said she wanted to be alone, she said. She said she wanted to be let alone, which is a different request entirely, and the one most women in your position are actually making.
ONE THING TO NOTICE
Today, notice how quickly a thought becomes a sentence you say out loud. See if you can hold one until evening.
If someone came to mind while you were reading this, send her these letters. The Permission Slips are yours when she stays.
